How it all started...
From our "Chicken Coop" origins in the 1930s to the facility we meet in today, our 90 year story is rich in history, faith, and community.
Over the years, Harbor Church (formerly known as East Tawas Assembly of God) has been blessed by the leadership of many great pastors. In 1934, East Tawas Assembly of God began as a small group of believers holding prayer meetings in an area home; at times meeting in homes, rendered church spaces with saw horse pews, and town halls.

OUR FIRST BUILDING
In 1939, the first church building was purchased. Prior to the acquisition of the property, the structure was being used as a large chicken coop. A few years later, the building was then raised off its foundation to put in a basement meant to facilitate Sunday school classrooms.

A TIME OF GROWTH
East Tawas Assembly of God continued to grow over the decades. Notably, in 1979 Rev, Edward & Metta Fairbanks tore down the original church building and constructed the facility we worship in today. 1988 saw the addition of a fellowship center, which we now use as our main worship center.
For the next 30 years, the church continued to be a presence of hope and life in East Tawas and the surrounded communities, under the leadership of 4 different pastors.

A NEW ERA
In 2019, Pastor Scott and Katie Shamel accepted the position of lead pastors and moved their family from Mt. Morris area to East Tawas. Under God's direction through them, we have rebranded ourselves as Harbor Church, because our greatest desire is to point people towards the hope, freedom, and refuge that is found in a life anchored in Jesus Christ.

WHERE WE ARE GOING
At Harbor Church, we are Kingdom Builders and we believe that God always more for us. With this in mind, we continue to dream up new ways to reach our community with the love of God. Our methods may change year in and year out, but our mission and our message remain the same. We once heard another pastor say it like this of their church, "We're committed to reach the lost at any cost, that doesn't cost us our beliefs." While this statement isn't original to us, it is very much the heartbeat of the staff and leadership here at Harbor Church. The best days are ahead, and we'd love to walk alongside you in life's great adventure.
